What is Reel Youth?
Reel Youth has over 20 years of experience empowering youth through media arts and moving image production. Founded in 2005, our mission is to provide high-impact, mobile media programming to underserved youth facing barriers due to identity, geography, culture or socioeconomics. Reel Youth strives to embody justice, community and freedom of self-expression through media arts. We specifically support underserved youth facing challenges to their identity and wellbeing. This includes 2SLGBTQ+ youth, youth in remote areas, Indigenous youth reclaiming cultural narratives, newcomer youth adjusting to life in Canada, and others facing socioeconomic barriers. For almost 20 years, Reel Youth has built an exemplary model of using film and video production to spark creativity, build skills, foster connection and give voice to marginalized communities across BC. We remain dedicated to our mission of empowering youth, celebrating diversity, strengthening connections, inspiring dialogue between generations, and cultivating understanding through shared stories. The relationships built and platforms provided for sharing diverse experiences have established Reel Youth as a leader within our field across the province. In our work we strive to embody what we hope to see in the world—a just humanity and community in which people are free to be themselves fully and without fear. A community where no one is exiled or silenced because of gender, gender expression, race, colour, ethnic or national origin, religion, sexual/affectional orientation, age, class, physical character or disability. We believe in the power of storytelling to make connections across differences.
